Cairo, 13 February, 2024 (TDF): Senior officials from the United States, Israel, Egypt, and Qatar have reconvened in Cairo to resume negotiations for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, as reported by Egyptian media outlets. The discussions come amid heightened international pressure on Israel to halt its bombardment of the southern Gaza city of Rafah, where approximately 1.5 million civilians reside amidst fears of an impending Israeli ground offensive.

Israeli rejection and international concerns

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has categorically rejected ceasefire proposals put forth by Hamas last week, deeming them “delusional” and asserting the potential for “total victory” in Gaza within months. Despite President Joe Biden’s call for the protection of civilians in the area, concerns persist regarding the potential devastating impact of an Israeli ground assault on Rafah.

Global criticism on Israel

Criticism of Israel’s military actions and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza has been echoed by a multitude of voices globally. UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron urged Israel to exercise restraint, while EU’s foreign policy chief Josep Borrell called for a cessation of arms shipments to Israel, citing the escalating death toll in Gaza. South Africa has even petitioned the International Court of Justice to consider additional emergency measures to safeguard Palestinian rights in light of the planned Israeli offensive.

Negotiation framework

The ongoing discussions in Cairo, facilitated by Egypt and Qatar with US support, center around a framework for a temporary truce. This framework involves the release of Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, coupled with a period of calm to de-escalate tensions in the region. Despite Israel’s dismissal of Hamas’s terms, diplomatic efforts persist to find a viable path towards a ceasefire agreement.

Humanitarian concerns

Amidst the geopolitical maneuvering and diplomatic negotiations, humanitarian concerns remain paramount. The escalating conflict has resulted in a dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with a significant portion of the population now crammed into Rafah, lacking access to basic necessities such as safe drinking water and adequate shelter. The potential consequences of an Israeli assault on Rafah are dire, prompting international calls for immediate action to protect civilian lives and alleviate the suffering of those caught in the crossfire
